Meet our 1979 F-150 SuperCab 2WD shortbed, a.k.a. Project Bonefish. I picked up this truck about six years ago and stored it at a buddy’s place until it was time to get to work.
Recently, my son Emmett and I were helping load up a Mustang for a friend. Emmett grabbed me by the arm and said, “DAD! I want to show you something.” He walked me over to the SuperCab and said, “The truck is so cool! Can we buy it?” I looked at him and said, “Buddy, that’s ours.” His eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. He has been asking to work on it ever since.
We sat down and started thinking about what we wanted to do for the build. The patina on the truck was too cool to paint, so we decided it was going to stay that way on the outside, but everything else was going to get touched—the interior will get a complete update (including fresh paint), the truck will get all new front and rear suspension with Air Lift all the way around, Detroit Steel wheels, a fresh grille, bumpers, lots of goodies from Auto Metal Direct, and something special under the hood. The small rust spots in the bed are going to get fixed and a fair amount of custom metal work is coming in the future.
Now that Green Giant is finished, it was time to bring the ’79 into the shop and get to work. I thought a great way to get my son involved was by starting at the beginning. We rolled into the shop and began the teardown process.
To say the interior was a mess is an understatement, but Emmett dove right in and got to work. While he was working the interior I started pulling the front end apart. So far, it hasn’t been too much of a fight, as all the bolts have come free rather easily. We still have a chunk of work to finish the process but it should happen quickly—then we will build it back up again.
The whole idea for the build is like a red-bottom shoe. Kind of plain on top but underneath it has that “pop.” We are excited to share this build process with all of you.
