Up next Building More Than Trucks: Sarah Boim’s Mission with C10s in the City Published on January 30, 2025 Author ST-STAFF Share article Facebook 0 Twitter 0 Mail 0 Preventative Maintenance Tips for Used Trucks Preventive maintenance is critical to improving any used truck’s durability, performance, and fuel economy. Used trucks come with higher mileage, so they are more likely to have wear and tear. This makes routine truck maintenance essential towards increasing their longevity. One also gets to address emerging issues in vital components like the transmission, suspension, and engine. It also improves fuel efficiency by resolving issues like clogged filters, malfunctioning fuel injectors, and underinflated tires that would degrade the typical fuel consumption. Truck preventive maintenance also catches minor issues before they develop into bigger ones, thereby increasing safety. It also maintains the resale value by ensuring the truck remains in optimal working condition.Subscribe to our weekly newsletter Truck PM Service Checklist Proper truck preventive maintenance ensures that used trucks remain efficient, reliable, and safe for several years to come. Addressing these potential problems may help vehicle owners avoid major repairs while increasing their longevity; the following are essential steps of a thorough preventive truck maintenance service. Check Fluid Levels and Quality Checking fluid levels is the first step in preventing damage or increasing longevity. Begin by monitoring the engine oil levels to ensure they are at the proper levels. They should be changed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dirty oil may indicate contamination or increased wear, meaning an oil change is needed. On the other hand, overfilled oil can lead to excessive pressure inside the engine, potentially causing car leaks or damage to seals. In addition to engine oil, brake, power steering, and transmission fluid should also be checked. Lower levels may lead to poor performance or mechanical issues. Regularly topping off or replacing these fluids as needed maintains the truck’s efficiency and prevents repairs later on. Inspect the Tires and Wheels Checking the pressure on a regular basis is essential for maintaining optimal performance and fuel economy. It is advisable to make sure the tire pressure is similar to the brand’s recommended PSI because under or over pressure may stress the engine, reducing fuel economy. Rotating the car tires every 5000 or 7000 miles is also important because it can lead to even wear across the tires. This improves vehicle stability and tire lifespan. Check and Replace Filters Regularly checking and replacing filters is also a way to improve the truck’s performance. The engine air filter, especially, allows for cleaning of the engine for combustion. Dirty air filters, though, reduce fuel economy and overall performance. Depending on the manufacturer’s specifications, they should be replaced from 12,000 to 15,000 miles. Likewise, change the air cabin filter to enhance the air quality inside the truck. The same must be true for the fuel filter: inspection and subsequent replacement will clean the system so contaminants do nothing to damage the fuel injectors. Inspect the Brakes and Suspension System Regularly checking the brake and suspension is critical to safety. It also increases overall comfort and vehicle stability. To begin, one can check the brake pads and rotors. Work the parts over and listen for squeaking or grinding noises because these show the pads need to be replaced. Inspecting the suspension system, especially the shocks and struts, is also advisable. These should be looked over for leaks or other visible damage. Worn struts can negatively affect ride quality, stability, and handling, leading to more damage if not appropriately addressed. Cooling System and Radiator Maintenance Having a properly functioning cooling system is important if one wants to prevent engine overheating. This can be especially costly if neglected. One of the first things to do is check the radiator hoses and lattice for damage. Due to wear and tear, these hoses can develop cracks, which means the coolant leaks. Loss of coolant eventually causes the radiator to lose its ability to help the engine maintain safe operating temperatures. The water pump plays a big role in coolant circulation. In case of a failed water pump, low coolant levels lead to engine overheating. If there is a strange noise or coolant leak around the water pump, it should be changed as soon as possible to avoid breakdowns. Repair the radiator hoses or any faulty water pump immediately to reduce any chances of having an overheated engine. Additional Preventative Maintenance Tips for Used Trucks One of the most effective ways to ensure the vehicle will serve its users well over the years is to adhere to a strict truck preventive maintenance schedule. Conducting a Vehicle Identification Number investigation before buying a truck would also be best because it exposes information about accidents, flooding, or fire damage on the used vehicle. This information comes in handy as it helps one avoid potential issues arising from the truck’s past. Preventative truck maintenance can be used for mileage, regular checking, and servicing. One may also refer to the owner’s manual for truck maintenance regulations tailored to the model. Manufacturers give unique recommendations for component inspections and fluid changes. Regular combined maintenance and understanding the history are essential to keeping used trucks reliable.
