When it comes to classic truck shows, it’s hard to beat the traveling tour put on by the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association. Every July, all things classic converge on Columbus, Ohio, for the Goodguys PPG Nationals. The event is for pre-1972 vehicles, but Sundays have been opened to all years of custom vehicles so that everyone can join in on the fun. The caliber of custom trucks showcased rivals its hot rod and classic bretheren at each Goodguys event.
One of the great recent additions to the event series is the highly competitive autocross action that is entertaining fans and fueling performance parts on classic cars and trucks. The Goodguys crew has added even more of these competitions to the stops around the country. In the past few years, we truck guys have gotten more involved in the autocross circuit, outfitting C-10s and other classic trucks with everything from LS swaps to coil-overs and purpose- built chassis to run the course, even beating many muscle cars at their own game.
At GG Columbus this year, “Rockin’ Rob” MacGregor of No Limit Engineering brought his Hellboy C-10 from California to face a recent addition from The Roadster Shop that brought out a powerful LS- powered C-10 on its own chassis. Kevin Bapst’s patina’d C-10 added to the C-10 competition crowd. The Summers & Sons race-inspired truck, driven by Brad Coomer, took home the Sponsor Shootout, and Rob MacGregor brought home Pro Truck Class gold. A total of 11 trucks competed in the autocross, and just think, only a couple of years ago there were none.
