Remembering an Icon: How Ken Block Inspired a Generation of Automotive Enthusiasts

Life is one of the things that most of us take for granted. We wake up every day and work toward one of our goals not knowing what could happen next.

For me, at a young age I discovered that I wanted to work in the automotive industry. One of the people who inspired me tremendously in my youth was professional rally driver Ken Block. I remember watching Rob and Big and seeing Ken do the first gymkhana video. That experience changed the course of life my in the best way. I eventually realized my dream.

I did not know Ken very well. We crossed paths a couple of times over the years. I’ve heard it said that you don’t always meet your idols; if you hope to, you will be disappointed. Well, that wasn’t the case for me. I actually did meet Ken, my idol. The three times we hung out together were great. I feel lucky to have those memories.

How he inspired an entire generation of enthusiasts is unparalleled. I have heard several people compare Ken to the late Carroll Shelby, and I think that is an apt comparison. Both were extreme in their passion, both raced with 125% of themselves, and both inspired me and so many others to get into the automotive industry.

I want to say rest in paradise, Ken. I will pray for your family and loved ones. My deepest condolences.
