They’re a peek into the design team’s wildest ideas

It’s been a busy few years for GMC’s team of stylists. They penned a new look for the Yukon and the Yukon XL, and they gave the Sierra 1500 a nip-and-tuck that we’ll discover in the coming months. Overhauling these hugely significant models hasn’t stopped them from exploring how the firm’s design language can evolve.

General Motors Design posted two forward-thinking renderings on its official Instagram account that illustrate two ways to move GMC’s design identity forward. Karan Moorjani, who works as an exterior designer for the company’s autonomous and electric vehicle division, created a truck that breaks all ties with the Sierra. It’s characterized by a tall front end with a wide grille and thin LED headlights, sculpted sides, and an unusually low cab. Generously-sized fender flares and tires suggest Moorjani envisioned it as a serious off-roader.

Joe Boniface, a member of GMC’s Strategic Advanced Design team, took a more realistic approach to moving the design language forward and away from sister company Chevrolet’s. His rendering shows a Heavy Duty model with a Denali-branded grille that takes up most of the real estate on the front end and encompasses horizontal rows of LED daytime running lights. It wears less chrome than the current-generation Sierra HD.

The launch coincides with the 73rd anniversary of the branch

Ram announced Thursday that the third of its five-truck “Built to Serve” series will officially launch Friday. The latest edition, finished in either Anvil or Billet Silver, honors the U.S. Air Force on the anniversary of its founding.

“Ram continues to honor all of those who serve or have served in the United States armed forces with distinction through our latest ‘Built to Serve’ offering,” said Ram chief Mike Koval Jr., in FCA’s announcement. “The ‘Built to Serve’ adage is something Ram truck owners, whether civilian or military, are very familiar with as it’s something we strive to build into every truck and van we produce.”

FCA is releasing a new truck approximately once every three months, each commemorating one of the five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Deliveries of the latest model are set to begin this week to coincide with the 73rd anniversary of the Air Force’s establishment as a separate branch on Sept. 18, 1947.

Nissan Frontier gets Nismo off-road goodies, compatible all the way back to 2005

They’re the first of many new parts for Frontier, Titan and Xterra

Off-road-oriented trucks are the hot trend right now, and automakers are moving beyond special off-road models to selling parts to upgrade existing trucks and SUVs. Ford has rolled out multiple products for the Ranger pickup, and now Nissan is aiming to match them. And it all starts with a new range of parts for the Nissan Frontier.

These parts make their debut on a 2020 Nissan Frontier participating in the Rebelle Rally – a race for women focusing on off-road driving and navigation ability – and will be available later this year. The most immediately noticeable of these parts is the steel off-road bumper. It weighs 106 pounds and features mounting points and holes for lights, shackles and a winch. Mounted to that bumper are a set of lights developed with Rigid Industries. The first lights available will be these round, 6-inch LED units, but other sizes, shapes and illumination patterns will come later. All lights will come with a switch, harness and covers. Capping off the visual upgrades are the 17-inch Nismo off-road wheels.

For functionality, there are the special Bilstein off-road shocks Nismo will offer. They’ve been tuned to handle off-road duty and being loaded down with off-road and overlanding equipment. They can handle additional wheel travel, and will support a 2-inch lift when combined with different springs. The rear shocks even have remote reservoirs.
