Hill’s Hot Rods and JD Glassworks Take Custom Truck Building to a Whole New Level
Most dreams are fueled by passion and a willingness to commit to something all the way. Jason Hill, owner of Hill’s Hot Rods in Lubbock, Texas, has always been a gearhead and custom truck fanatic from the day he got that magic plastic license from the state of Texas and started wrenching on his first truck, an ’81 C-10 square body. That early Chevy box truck influence might help explain why Hill’s has so many trick 1973-87 GM products on deck, but this shop is not just a one trick pony. Having rolling works of art from HHR land on the covers and pages of Street Trucks over the past four years, their talents can be applied to any blank metal canvas, classic or contemporary.
In 2001 the shop was relocated to Lubbock and an additional 900 square feet brought the shop to 3,500 square feet, which was expanded to 5,900 feet in 2006. Business was growing and more local and out-of-state enthusiasts were bringing their rides to Hill ’s for everything from lowering kits to full frame off builds.
In 2008 the recently renovated, 5,900-square-foot shop was busting at the seams, and Jason and his team of craftsmen needed still more room. Finding a 24,000-square-foot location right off the main highway that runs through the center of town, was a stroke of luck, and the location became the new home for Hill’s Hot Rods. In the latter part of 2008 a few months were spent painting, plumbing and upgrading the new shop for some serious custom truck building. Each employee now has their own workbench, tool and fabrication area, and the vehicles are moved to each employee according to area of expertise. In addition to occupying an impressive facility that can virtually fill any custom demand, Jimmy Davis launched JD Glassworks out of the Hill’s location and handles custom audio work, enclosure fabrication and one–off interior modifications. Jimmy is a true master with wood and fiberglass. Now that’s custom truck building at a one-stop shop.
